Ember, a clean energy think tank, stated in a new report that in the first half of 2024, wind and solar power generation in the European Union surpassed fossil fuel power generation for the first time. From January to June 2024, the share of wind and solar power in the EU electricity structure will be 30%, while the share of fossil fuel power generation will be 27%. Ember stated that the EU's electricity demand increased by 0.7% in the first half of the year, rebounding from a two-year decline during the energy crisis, and acknowledged that the mild winter of 2023/2024 limited overall electricity demand growth. According to the think tank, the total amount of wind and solar power exceeds fossil fuel power generation in 13 EU member states, with Germany, Belgium, Hungary, and the Netherlands reaching this milestone for the first time between January and June 2024. In the first half of this year, fossil fuel power generation across the European Union decreased by 17% compared to the same period in 2023. Therefore, in the first half of 2024, fossil fuels will only account for 27% of the total electricity generation in the European Union, compared to 33% in the same period of 2023. Ember said that both coal and natural gas power generation have decreased, with coal decreasing by 24% and natural gas decreasing by 14%. Ember stated in a report last month that between 2019 and 2023, the surge in solar and wind power generation replaced one-fifth of the EU's fossil fuel power generation. Ember pointed out in the report that although there were encouraging clean energy milestones in the first half of 2024, the EU needs additional policy support, including easing bottlenecks and obstacles to accelerating the deployment of wind and solar energy, such as permits and restrictions on grid access. The think tank stated that under current policy conditions and plans from EU member states, the group will not be able to achieve the REPowerEU target of installing 750 GW of solar and 425 GW of wind energy by 2030.
