Synergy: Oversized data centers exceed 1000, total capacity doubles every four years

According to new data from Synergy Research Group, by the end of 2023, the number of large data centers operated by hyperscale providers will increase to 992, surpassing the thousand mark by early 2024. Meanwhile, with the rapid increase in the number of data center facilities and the continued rise in average capacity, the total capacity of ultra large scale data centers has doubled in just four years.

According to Synergy's data, measured in megawatts (MW) of critical IT loads, the United States still accounts for 51% of global capacity, while Europe and China each account for about one-third. Looking ahead, Synergy predicts that the total capacity of ultra large scale data centers will double again in the next four years. On the one hand, in the future, there will be approximately 120-130 additional ultra large data centers going online every year; On the other hand, driven by generative artificial intelligence technology, the scale of these newly opened data centers will be even larger, which will further drive capacity growth.

 

This research is based on the analysis of the data center footprints of 19 major cloud and Internet service companies in the world, including the largest operators in the fields of SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, search, social networking, e-commerce and games. To a large extent, Synergy's predictions are based on tracking the future data center planning of ultra large scale operators. Currently, Synergy has 440 future hyperscale data centers known to be in different stages of planning, development, or installation.

The companies with the widest data center footprint are the leading cloud providers - Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Each company has multiple data centers in many other countries around the world, in addition to having a large data center in the domestic market of the United States. These three companies now collectively account for 60% of all hyperscale data center capacity. It is followed by Meta/Facebook, Alibaba, Tencent, Apple, ByteDance and other relatively small large-scale operators.

John Dinsdale, Chief Analyst at Synergy Research Group, stated, "Although the number and average size of hyperscale data centers are growing at an alarming rate, there are many complexities and subtle differences behind these trends. Generally speaking, owned data centers are much larger than leased data centers, and hyperscale companies have much larger data centers in their home countries than their international facilities, although there are many exceptions to these trends. We have also seen some divergence in data center sizes. Although core data centers are becoming larger, there are also more and more or relatively smaller data centers emerging to drive infrastructure closer to customers. However, overall, all major growth trend lines are rapidly rising.
